Daisies (A Pantoum)

How can we trust

men who pluck daisies

before they had the chance

to shine to the sun?

Men who pluck daisies

forget how little girls love

to shine to the sun-

princesses crowned with flowers’ weave.

Forget how little girls love

those bright sunny centers and pure petals,

princesses crowned with flowers’ weave-

recall that I love the blossoms, too.

Those bright sunny centers and pure petals

linger on the lawn, perfumed with spring.

Recall that I love the blossoms, too-

see this gift not for you to snatch.

Linger on the lawn perfumed with spring,

men who pluck the daisies-

See? This gift not for you to snatch,

but beauty is a burden to cherish.

Men who pluck the daisies

now come to fields with sons in tow,

“but beauty is a burden to cherish,”

fathers teach as daisies thrive.
